長年アルバムの制作に関わってきたプロデューサーBob Rockから離れ、Rick Rubinをプロデューサーに迎えて制作されたMetallicaの通算9枚目となるアルバム。前作『St. Anger』にはないギターソロの復活とドラムの音が改善され、Metallicaの原点回帰ともとれる作品で、『...And Justice for All』に近いニュアンスがある。音作りに関しては『...And Justice for All』ほどの全体的に刺さるような感じではないが、メタルを意識したヘヴィなサウンドに仕上がっている。このアルバムはアメリカのビルボードチャートで初登場1位を獲得し、わずか3日間で49万枚を売り上げた。2012年には全米レコード協会からダブルプラチナ認定を受けている。

Metallicaの通算10枚目となるアルバムは、全ての楽曲にMVがある。前作の『Death Magnetic』は長尺の曲が目立っていたが、本作は非常にタイトに制作されている印象だ。シンプルでわかりやすいリフが中心になっている楽曲が多く、往年のファンが待ちわびたであろうスラッシュメタルが色濃く出た作品である。今までのキャリアと初期のイメージを総括したことで、ローリングストーン誌を始めとした各音楽メディアから「2016年のベストアルバム」として1位に選ばれている。このアルバムはアメリカのビルボードを含めた57か国で1位に輝き、75か国でトップ3、105か国でトップ5以内に入っており、2018年のグラミー賞の最優秀ロックアルバムにノミネートされた。
